Device Lifetime Validation
MDR Reference: Annex I, GSPR 6.6; Annex II, Section 6.1
Service Item ID: mdr_sec06_lifetime
Applicability: Non-software medical devices (distinct from shelf-life)
Overview
Device lifetime validation demonstrates that a device maintains its safety and performance throughout its defined operational lifetime. MDR GSPR 6.6 requires manufacturers to define the device lifetime and provide supporting evidence. This is distinct from shelf-life, which covers the pre-use storage period.
Key Concepts
- Device lifetime: The period during which the device can be used safely and as intended after first use/implantation
- Shelf life: The period before first use during which the device remains suitable for use
- Functional testing over lifetime: Demonstrating performance at end-of-life conditions
- Fatigue and wear analysis: Mechanical degradation assessment for applicable devices
